Street construction delays on South Staples Street expected during the next year

Traffic on South Staples Street where a new Walmart opened Wednesday is expected to be heavy during the next year as the store attracts customers and a street reconstruction project continues.

A two-phased street reconstruction project along Staples Street between Everhart Road and Brawner Parkway is part of a 2008 voter-approved bond.

A stretch of the five-lane street between Everhart Road and Barracuda Place is under construction with a section of the road finished in front of the newly opened Walmart in what was once Parkdale Plaza.

In March, the City Council approved the $6.4 million construction contract, which includes total street reconstruction with new water and wastewater infrastructure. Walmart paid $70,000 of the contract with Texas Sterling Construction Co. to ensure the section in front of the new store would be finished Wednesday.

Construction between Carmel Parkway and Barracuda Place will continue through late spring, according to city engineers. It’s expected to be completed in late spring or early summer.

The second phase of Staples Street construction will be from Brawner Parkway to Barracuda Street. Assistant City Engineer Dan Biles said the project is estimated to cost about $10 million and will go out for public bid some time later this year. Construction is expected to begin in the spring and take about nine months.
